Green Digital Transformation: How to Sustainably Close the Digital Divide and Harness Digital Tools for Climate Action

Climate change is occurring in the context of rapid digitalization of public life.

From online trading and social networks to smart manufacturing, information technology is present in every aspect of economic and social life. By stimulating economic development, digital transformation contributes to achieving carbon neutrality. The World Bank estimates that digital technologies could reduce emissions by 20% by 2050 in the three highest-emitting sectors: energy, manufacturing and transport.

However, as the organization’s experts note, the implementation of green transformation is complicated by the growing digital divide.

Three billion people still do not have access to the Internet. Bridging the technology divide, improving the resilience of digital infrastructure, and ensuring access to technology for the most vulnerable are critical to economic development and adaptation to climate change.
