UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF) Session "Accelerating Implementation of the 2030 Agenda – the Contribution of the Supreme Audit Institutions"

On July 15, 2022 the HLPF Session "Accelerating Implementation of the 2030 Agenda – the Contribution of the Supreme Audit Institutions" was held.

The speakers presented the practical examples of audit work – at the national, regional and global levels – on the assessment and analysis of the interrelationships between the SDGs. The progress of different countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals varies. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this asymmetry, slowing down the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda.

Deputy Director General of the INTOSAI Development Initiative (IDI) Archana Shirsat, highlighted the key audit features of resilient national healthcare systems and sustainable public procurement.

Vivi Niemenmaa, Secretary General of the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Audit (WGEA), noted that the problems of climate change and biodiversity are closely interrelated, but the measures taken rarely affect the overall basis of this crisis. WGEA plans to work on finding relations in order to develop common audit criteria in this area through the study of accumulated data sets.

Managing Director of the US Government Audit Office (US GAO), Mark Gaffigan, said that the share of SAIs reports related to the SDGs was 68% (383 out of 563) in 2021. He also highlighted three cases on the impact of the recommendations by US GAO on progress towards achieving SDG 14.

The Audit Coordinator of SAI Brazil, Adriano Martin Juras, focused on the collective efforts of the SAIs of Latin America and the Caribbean to conduct a joint audit of protected areas. Two innovative audit methodologies INDIMAPA and FSDL analysis were presented to the audience.

The last report was delivered by the Chairperson of SAI Indonesia, Isma Yatun, who presented the results of the Voluntary National Teview (VNR) on the implementation of the SDGs in 2021, as part of Indonesia’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda.
