World Health Statistics 2024

The World Health Organization (WHO) presented the results of a global assessment of key health indicators.

According to experts, between 2019 and 2021, the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic, life expectancy worldwide decreased by 1.8 years to 71.4 years, the same as in 2012.

Regionally, the greatest impact of the coronavirus was recorded in Latin America and Southeast Asia, where life expectancy decreased by about three years. The COVID-19 pandemic became the third leading cause of death globally in 2020 and the second in 2021. Chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer, and dementia) accounted for 78% of non-COVID-19 deaths.

Among the main causes of reduced life expectancy are undernutrition and overweight. In 2022, more than 1 billion people aged five and older were obese, and more than half a billion were undernourished.
