Global Methane Tracker 2023

Methane emissions have been one of the key causes of global warming since the industrial revolution. Reducing emissions is a prerequisite for improving air quality and the environment in general.

However, according to the International Energy Agency, in 2022 emissions in the energy sector rose to almost a historical record - 135 million tons. At the same time, 40% of methane emissions come from the oil, gas, coal and bioenergy industries. The agreement to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030, concluded "on the margins" of COP26, did not lead to visible results.

According to the experts of the organization, with the help of already existing technologies, it is possible to reduce methane emissions in the energy industry by 70%. Among the most practical tools, the authors distinguish:

  • for the oil and gas sector - the use of software for leak detection, repair and modernization of leaky equipment;
  • for the coal industry - the use of flaring or oxidation technologies.
