Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024

Global Employment Trends for Youth 2024

The number of unemployed young people worldwide is at its lowest level in 15 years, according to a new report from the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In 2023, the youth unemployment rate was 13%, or 64.9 million people. The share of young people in education or training programs was 48% (38% in 2000). Despite the overall positive trend, the youth unemployment rate continues to rise in East Asia (by 4.3% compared to 2019), Southeast Asia and the Pacific (by 1%). In low-income countries, only one in five young people aged 25 to 29 manages to find secure paid work (a contract for more than one year). To improve the socio-economic situation of young people, experts recommend:

  • Сreating jobs and improving access to finance
  • Organizing professional retraining programs for young professionals
  • Implementing programs for the employment of disadvantaged youth
  • Bringing labor legislation into line with international standards
  • Creating an incentive for the development of youth entrepreneurship.
