Finding Your Way Through AI’s Regulatory Jungle

With the increased popularity of ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, European Union (EU) experts are developing new rules for regulating the technology.

The key task is to find a balance between existing legal imperatives and innovative development.

The draft EU Act on Artificial Intelligence contains a definition of AI, proposes criteria for assessing technological risks, as well as requirements for certification and transparency of documentation. According to Boston Consulting Group analysts, the document is intended to systematize and unify the legal regulation of the digital economy (104 existing legal acts).

In continuation of the regulation of AI at the supranational level, the EU member states plan to implement the provisions of the Act in their national legal systems. Boston Consulting Group experts predict that new regulatory mechanisms can serve as the basis for international standards for regulating AI.
