Assessing the Costs and Benefits of Climate Change Adaptation

The European Environment Agency submitted a new report “Assessment of Costs and Benefits for Adaptation to Climate Change”.

The total economic losses from climate change in the European Union in the period from 1980 to 2021. reached more than 1.5 trillion Euros. This indicates an urgent need to speed up the implementation of measures in the field of sustainable development.

According to authors, measures can be considered effective if the ratio of benefits and costs exceeds 1.5. Measures leading to a lower coefficient require careful consideration due to their economic uncertainty.

When analyzing the effectiveness of measures taken, experts recommend taking into account their contribution to socio-economic development, maintaining biodiversity, improving air quality and water resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Among the main problems are the lack of data to assess the national policy in the field of environmental protection.
