Guidance on Generative AI in Education and Research

Guidance on Generative AI in Education and Research

UNESCO has published “Guidance on Generative AI in Education and Research”. The document was designed to address the disruptions caused by Generative AI technologies.

The first sections of the Guidance explain what Generative AI is and how it works. The following sections elaborate on the controversies around Generative AI and their implications for education, in particular how it is worsening digital data divides.

The Guidance then sets out seven key steps for governments should take to regulate Generative AI and establish policy frameworks for its ethical use in education and research, including through the adoption of global, regional or national data protection and privacy standards.

  • Step 1: Endorse international or regional General Data Protection Regulations (GDPRs) or develop national GDPRs
  • Step 2: Adopt/revise and fund whole-of-government strategies on AI
  • Step 3: Solidify and implement specific regulations on the ethics of AI
  • Step 4: Adjust or enforce existing copyright laws to regulate AI-generated content
  • Step 5: Elaborate regulatory frameworks on generative AI
  • Step 6: Build capacity for proper use of GenAI in education and research
  • Step 7: Reflect on the long-term implications of GenAI for education and research
