IRENA. International Trade and Green Hydrogen: Supporting The Global Transition to A Low-Carbon Economy

The International Renewable Energy Agency  launched a new working paper, “International trade and green hydrogen: Supporting the global transition to a low-carbon economy.”

The authors analyzed the dynamics of production and trade of green hydrogen.

To meet global energy demand, hydrogen production must increase more than five times its current level by 2050. International trade can play a significant role in meeting demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives, as some regions may lack domestic production capacity.

The organization's recommendations for developing global trade in green hydrogen include:

  • Eliminating trade barriers to expand access to technology;
  • Development of a reliable and efficient production infrastructure;
  • Providing state support for the production of environmentally friendly and fossil hydrogen;
  • Using sustainable public procurement to stimulate demand for green hydrogen and related technologies;
  • Increasing international cooperation to ensure consistency in emissions certification systems.
