Incentivising the development of new antibacterial treatments 2023
A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the development of new antibacterial drugs has been published.
In 2019, more than 4.9 million deaths were due to bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It remains one of the top 10 global public health threats.
Moreover, antimicrobial resistance has negative economic consequences: it leads to an increase in the cost of healthcare and the production of medicines. By 2050, the cumulative economic losses from AMR are projected to be over $100 trillion.
WHO's main recommendations for combating AMR include ensuring the sustainability of the supply and availability of antibiotics, stimulating research and developing new antibacterial drugs that meet public health needs.
